Qurbani for orphans, widows and the poor
What is Qurbani?
The word Qurbani means ‘offering’ and is the ritual of sacrificing an animal, usually a goat, sheep, cow or camel, during the month of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic Calendar. The practice of Qurbani is a recognition of the sacrifice made by the Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son for the sake of Allah (SWT).
Every year, to commemorate his sacrifice, every able-bodied Muslim is expected to provide a Qurbani donation in three shares: one to help those living in poverty, one to feed friends and family, and one to keep for themselves.
How to Make a Qurbani Donation
Traditionally, Qurbani donations are made in the form of a sacrifice, but due to the law of the land in countries like the United States where only certified people and establishments can carry out animal slaughter, many people now give Qurbani in the form of a charitable donation. Here at Orphans in Need USA, we accept Qurbani donations which we use to provide animals to communities in need.
We understand the importance of quality sourcing from hard-working farmers and we work closely with our partners to ensure Qurbani animals are raised healthily and according to Qurbani rules. Our teams on the ground will ensure every needy family can enjoy a nutritious meal for Qurbani Eid 2025 with their share of the Qurbani donation.
How Much is Qurbani?
If you are to make a monetary Qurbani donation, the amount you pay will be influenced by several factors. First of all, some animals are more expensive than others, i.e. a cow will cost more in the way of a donation than a goat. Secondly, a person might choose to give Qurbani on behalf of someone else, like a deceased relative, and this will require more money.
Qurbani 2025 prices will be confirmed closer to the time.
Who Does Qurbani?
There are strict rules surrounding who must perform Qurbani. The following group of people are liable to make the sacrifice/donation:
- Adults of sound mind
- Who possess more than 52.2 tolas of silver (1 tola = 11.7g of silver)
- Who are not travelling
Who meet the nisab threshold for Zakat
Why is Qurbani Significant?
Qurbani is extremely important in Islam and began with the Prophet Ibrahim when he dreamt that Allah (SWT) had asked him to sacrifice the most precious thing to him. When he realised the most precious and important thing was his son, Ismail, the Prophet made a difficult choice to sacrifice his son for the sake of Allah (SWT). Explaining to his son what was to happen, the two travelled together to make the sacrifice and it was at the last moment when Allah (SWT) recognised his great sacrifice and sent a ram to be sacrificed in Ismail’s place.
When is Qurbani?
Qurbani 2025 in the United States will take place from Friday, 6th June to Tuesday, 10th June 2025, in line with the sighting of the moon. The month of Dhul Hijjah is expected to begin on 28th May 2025, with Hajj occurring from 4th June and the Day of Arafah on 5th June.
When is Eid ul-Adha?
Eid ul-Adha is the second of the Eid celebrations and celebrated on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, lasting three to four days, depending on the location. The Qurbani Eid 2025 is expected to fall on Saturday, June 7th, with the final day falling on Tuesday, June 10th, but is dependent on the sighting of the moon. Eid celebrations are a time for family and friends to come together, eat delicious food and, as with Eid ul-Fitr, make dedicated Eid prayers and wear special clothes in celebration of the day.
Orphans in Need USA and Qurbani
Every year, your Qurbani donations help provide quality meals to thousands of families in need and living in poverty, this year we want to help even more people to enjoy their Eid celebrations.
Giving meat to the less fortunate as required during Qurbani spreads happiness so they may also enjoy the event, celebration and festivities of Eid ul-Adha.
At Orphans in Need USA, we recognize that many families living in abject poverty will not have the means to participate in Qurbani. With your help, we will carefully select an animal for you and distribute the meat for you locally to our needy widows and orphans. We always ensure that the meat is sourced locally, meaning that the benefit of your donation is not only felt by the families you’re supporting, but their local communities too.
(Please note: a large animal is made up of seven shares, therefore can be carried out for seven different people. In India, a large animal refers to a buffalo.)
Donate your Qurbani online to Orphans in Need USA and make this Eid a time of great delight for our widows and orphans.
