Kenya is a country located in East Africa. It has a population of roughly 47 million people and is home to one of the biggest economies in the region. And according to the Human Development Index, it is the 48th least developed country.

Whilst the country has made great strides in providing its residents with political stability and maintaining a good export network, there are many issues that plague Kenyans and contribute to their hardship. Orphans in Need is just one of the charity foundations in Kenya. Our team provides life-saving aid to those who need it the most, but the seriousness of the situation in Kenya cannot be stressed enough.

Healthcare Crisis

Kenya has a severe lack of infrastructure which means healthcare is limited, especially to those who live in rural areas (which is most of the population). Every year, thousands of people and children die needlessly from diseases like cholera and pneumonia, and the Covid-19 pandemic has only exacerbated this.

Medical care is so underfunded and hard to come by that the biggest killer in Kenya is HIV/AIDS. Approximately 4% of children under the age of five die from the disease. Pair this with an infant mortality rate of 31.9 per every 1,000 births, and it’s clear to see how much Kenya needs assistance with its healthcare access.

Widespread Poverty

It’s estimated that 46% of Kenyans live in poverty, with 30% of low-income families headed by women. Here at Orphans in Need, we focus a lot of our efforts on assisting widowed women and children as we know just how vulnerable they are. Kenya is no exception, with women and children more likely to be victims of exploitation and many undertaking dangerous work just to try and make ends meet.

Such is the situation that it’s not uncommon for children to drop out of school and go to work to try and support their families. Without an education, future employment opportunities and chances of escaping poverty are limited, but often, their contributions are desperately needed. It’s thought that over 30% of the Kenyan population is living below the international poverty line, trying to forge a living on less than $1.90 per day.

Refugee Population

Kenya’s location in East Africa means it is surrounded by countries marred by war and conflict. As a result, it sees a high population of refugees and is home to Dadaab, the world’s largest refugee camp.

There are more than 598,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya, most of whom come from Somalia, Ethiopia and South Sudan. There are likely thousands more undocumented. As Kenya struggles to support its native population, it is beginning to crack down on the refugee situation. Still, as conflict continues in surrounding areas, it will be hard to stem the flow.

Adverse Weather Patterns

There have been 12 serious droughts since 1990, including the 2017 drought, which left 3.4 million people food insecure. From the driest heat through to the wettest floods, Kenya’s climate is unstable and stuck between two extremes, displacing millions of people and seeing many more go hungry.
